The Abbey Coffee Co. in Marion recently celebrated 11 years serving the Grant County community

Barista Drew McFarlane cited his coworkers as one of his favorite things about working at the Abbey. McFarlane said that he had been a customer at the Abbey throughout his education at Indiana Wesleyan University, so when he found himself looking for a part-time position, the Abbey was one of his first ideas.

McFarlane said that he enjoys seeing the space the Abbey creates for people to fellowship and enjoy quality coffee.

“Coffee is a good medium and we try to perfect it, but it’s to bring people together to have good conversations, especially Christ centered conversations,” McFarlane said.

Savannah Fry, a barista who has been employed at the Abbey since June said the work culture is a key factor in her love for the Abbey.

Fry said The Abbey is all about connection.

“I’m able to give them a good drink, which is valuable, but also hopefully be able to provide them with good conversation, or just a good space in general,” Fry said.

Customer Emily Detmers said she doesn’t go to the Abbey often but she appreciates the way the staff engage her in conversation and display an interest in her day.

“I feel like the people here are really nice, more so than other coffee shops in the area. They actually talk to you about your day and do more than take your order,” Detmers said.

The Abbey features many different traditional coffee and tea options, as well as a seasonal menu that reflects the changing seasons.
